Rübig: STOA working to build a Road Map for ageing research
A Road Map to guide European research on ageing and health for the next ten to fifteen years is set to be produced with support from the STOA Committee.
On May 11th, Mr Paul Rübig, MEP and STOA Chairman has co-chaired a workshop to enable high-level research funders and stakeholders to contribute, at an early stage, to the development of the definitive Road Map for Ageing Research in Europe.
By 2050, it is predicted that over a quarter of the population in most European countries will be aged over 65, with people older than 65 making up one-third of the population in Spain and Italy.
The Road Map will mark the main research milestones for the years to come and guide the national and regional policy makers, the research community and the R&D funders to successfully meet the challenge of an ageing population in Europe.
The broad scientific platform of the Road Map will also guide the European businesses to engage this large consumer market by identifying older people’s needs for better market awareness and innovative product and services design.
The Road Map will also provide opportunities for a more effective public spending in health and care systems and services.
Themes that will be explored include: biology of ageing and biomedical solutions; health and social care services and systems; the contribution of older workers; design issues for living, working and caring environments; health promotion and prevention, and; medical and pharmaceutical interventions. The areas of research will be based on the widest possible consensus between stakeholders including, policy makers, academics, practitioners, retailers, industrialists, service providers and older people
